Spring into Global Astronomy Month with SkySafari!

Southern Stars app sale boosts Astronomers Without Borders

San Francisco, CA, April 16th, 2012 - April is Global Astronomy Month, and Southern Stars Group, LLC, is celebrating it with a two-week promotion of its award-winning SkySafari astronomy apps. But this isn't just an ordinary sale. Thirty percent of the proceeds during the two-week promo will be donated to Astronomers Without Borders, a global non-profit organization promoting better international relations through shared interest in astronomy and space exploration - and the organizer of Global Astronomy Month.

The SkySafari app sale proceeds will support programs like AWB's Global Star Party on April 28th, 2012. Last year, the Global Star Party brought together thousands of people from 140 countries worldwide, most of whom had never looked through a telescope before. This year's Global Star Party promises to be even bigger. Rare astronomical events that the public can enjoy - like an annular solar eclipse on May 20th, and the Transit of Venus on June 5th - are just around the corner, and AWB plans further activities around them.

In 2011, AWB endorsed SkySafari as its preferred mobile astronomy app. AWB founder Mike Simmons writes, "SkySafari is no toy meant just to impress friends. It's real astronomy software that we can depend on." SkySafari 3 has been dowloaded more than 1.5 million times, and has a 5-star rating on the iTunes store. It has won numerous awards, including a MacWorld Best-of-Show in 2010, Sky & Telescope Magazine's Hot New Product award for 2012, and a rare 5/5 star review from The Mac Observer. Gizmodo calls SkySafari "the best stargazing app available for iOS."

The promotion runs through April 30th, 2012. It applies to both the iOS and Android versions of SkySafari. During the promo, Southern Stars' apps will be offered at up to 30% off regular price. Thirty percent of the proceeds will be donated to Astronomers Without Borders. The SkySafari apps come in three versions - Basic, Plus, and Pro - and will be priced at $2, $12, and $40, respectively, compared with regular prices of $3, $15, and $60.

"We're amazed by how fast Astronomers Without Borders has achieved truly global reach," said Southern Stars founder Tim DeBenedictis. "It's not just AWB's roots in amateur astronomy that impressed us - it's their unique focus on sharing a common love of the night sky to bring people in different cultures and continents together. AWB's mission fits in perfectly with our motto: mobile astronomy for everyone. I can't imagine a partner we'd be more pleased to support."
